Meet the Top QBs from the 2018 Michigan Showcase

The Sound Mind Sound Body Michigan Showcase concluded on Dec. 28 at Ford Field, with a 7-on-7 tournament conducted to close out the day.

Over the course of three drill-filled sessions, the Showcase attendees were broken up into groups based on position, and each group was trained by former players and/or coaches with expertise at the given position.

The quarterbacks were trained by the founder and owner of Quarterback University, Donovan Dooley. Below is some background info on the top quarterbacks from the Showcase, as well as a critique on each QB from Dooley:   

Mark Konecny – The 2022 prospect from Muskegon Mona Shores currently stands at 5-foot-10, 155 pounds. Along with playing football, he plays hockey (forward and left wing) and baseball (second baseman).

According to Konecny, his best skill on the football field is his vision, which is helped out by having to find the open man in hockey.

Dooley’s critique: The 2022 Mona Shores quarterback looked beyond-his-years good throughout the camp. He caught the attention of position coaches by delivering field and boundary shots.

Kaleb Garner – The 2021 prospect from Chicago (Ill.) Kenwood Academy currently stands at 5-foot-9, 150 pounds.

According to Garner, his best skills on the football field are being intelligent, poised under center and being able to throw the ball with accuracy.

Dooley’s critique: The 2021 Chicago-based QB displayed confidence during the routes-on-air drill. He threw some level-two deep balls that were delivered with pinpoint accuracy.

Giovanni Mastromatteo – The 2021 prospect from Clarkston Everest Collegiate currently stands at 5-foot-10, 145 pounds. Along with playing football, he plays baseball (shortstop).

According to Mastromatteo, his best intangible is consistency, and his best skill on the football field is being a dual-threat passer.

Dooley’s critique: The 2021 quarterback continued to show flashes of his upside throughout the camp. During the red zone 1-on-1s, he showed he could fit the ball into tight windows.

Jacob Kelbert – The 2020 prospect from Livonia Franklin stands at 5-foot-11, 185 pounds. Along with playing football, he plays baseball (outfield and pitcher).

According to Kelbert, his best intangible is his football IQ. As he put it, “No kid will ever be more prepared for a game, and watch more film on a team every week than me.”

Kelbert also does well inside the classroom, with a 3.45 GPA.

Dooley’s critique: The 2020 left-handed quarterback continues to show that he’s a pure gamer. Very gritty during competitive settings. Solid ball placement during all phases of the camp.

 

Tanner Slazinski – The 2021 prospect from Bloomfield Hills currently stands at 6-foot-3, 180 pounds. Along with playing football, he stars on the lacrosse field.

According to Slazinski, his best intangible is his arm strength.

Dooley’s critique: The Bloomfield Hills 2021 prospect has a ton of upside. Showcased great attention to detail and focus. Savvy in pocket-presence drills and competitive in 7-on-7.

Vincenzo Meschi – The 2021 prospect from Naperville (Ill.) Neuqua Valley currently stands at 6-foot-1, 180 pounds. Along with playing for Neuqua Valley, he suits up at QB in 7v7 play for the Naperville-based Midwest Boom.

According to Meschi, his best skills on the football field are being able to effectively read coverages and being able to effectively throw the deep ball.

Meschi also gets it done inside the classroom, with a 3.5 GPA.

Dooley’s critique: The 2021 Illinois native had a smooth delivery, and stayed even-keeled during 1-on-1s.

 

Zach Trainor – The 2021 prospect from Walled Lake Western currently stands at 6-foot-1, 205 pounds.

According to Trainor, his best skills on the football field are being able to effectively read and process coverages, as well as being able to accurately throw the pigskin.

Dooley’s critique: The 2021 Walled Lake Western quarterback will be taking over the reins at Western with Boston College commit Sam Johnson III graduating in the spring. Trainor proved to be one of the top quarterbacks in the camp. His command and confidence were showcased, as he threw the ball all over the field with poise.

 

Jalin Pitchford – The 2021 prospect from Wyandotte Roosevelt currently stands at 6-feet tall, 187 pounds.

Along with playing football, Pitchford is a track star, competing in the 100-meter dash, 300-meter hurdles and the 4x100m relay.

According to Pitchford, his best skill on the football field is his playmaking ability.

He also excels inside the classroom, possessing a 4.0 GPA ever since he began receiving letter grades in sixth grade.

Dooley’s critique: The 2021 dual-threat quarterback showed off his high-powered arm talent during 1-on-1s. His physique shows his commitment to the weight room and nutrition.

Sebastian Brown – The 2020 prospect from Detroit Cass Tech stands at 6-foot-2, 185 pounds. Along with playing football, he’s a member of the Cass Tech track team, and plays baseball (outfield) and soccer (striker).

According to Brown, his best intangible is being a strong leader.

Also, he excels inside the classroom, with a 4.0 GPA.

Dooley’s critique: The 2020 lefty will take over the reins at QB for Cass Tech in the fall. Brown was very consistent on intermediate shots. As he continues to develop, he should have a good shot to make a big run this upcoming season.

Michael Martin-El – The 2020 prospect from Detroit King stands at 6-foot-3, 181 pounds. Along with playing football, he’s on the King baseball team, where he plays pitcher.

According to Martin-El, his best skill on the football field is his ability to strongly throw the football.

Dooley’s critique: Showed that he belongs among the top quarterbacks by delivering consistent strikes in gauntlet and competitive drills.

Andrew Fuss – The 2021 prospect from Grandville currently stands at 5-foot-7, 150 pounds.

According to Fuss, he plans to complete high school as an academic scholar and graduate with honors.

Dooley’s critique: The Grandville quarterback came in with a chip on his shoulder. He proved to be able to spin the football, despite his school’s wing-T offense.

 

Anthony Romphf – The 2020 prospect from Southfield A&T stands at 6-feet tall, 180 pounds. Along with playing football, he’s on the A&T track team, where he competes in the 60-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter dashes.

According to Romphf, his best intangible is being a strong leader, and his best skill on the football field is making big plays that break down the defense.

On top of his great athletic ability, he possesses a 3.3 GPA.

Dooley’s critique: The No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the state of Michigan showcased tremendous confidence. Romphf showed that he can make any and every throw on the field.
